COMMITTEE ON RIGHTS OF CHILD POSTPONES EXAMINATION OF SECOND PERIODIC REPORT OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS

23 May 2006

23 May 2006

The Committee on the Rights of the Child today postponed its consideration of the second periodic report of the Marshall Islands on how that country is implementing the provisions of the Convention on the Rights of the Child because the delegation of that country did not show up to present the report.

After discussing the situation, the Chairman said that the Committee would postpone the consideration of the report to the next session. A letter would be drafted to encourage the Marshall Islands to provide answers to the list of issues and to provide assurances that a delegation would attend the next session. He said if the State party did not respond, or if it indicated that it could not send a delegation to Geneva to present the report, then the Committee would have no choice but to consider the report in absentia.

When Chamber A of the Committee reconvenes at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, 24 May, it will take up the third periodic report of Lebanon. Chamber B of the Committee is today considering the third periodic report of Mexico.
