MORNING HR/ESC/98/37 25 November 1998
The Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights began this morning a first reading of a draft general comment on "Domestic application of the International Covenant of Economic, Social and Cultural Rights".
Members offered broad comments on the six-page document, then began a paragraph-by-paragraph review. The draft was written by Committee Chairman Philip Alston.
Several members also suggested the quick drafting -- at this session or the next -- of a general comment on the right to food. The Chairman said a proposed text on the subject would be put before the group by the end of the week for anticipated consideration next week.
The Committee will reconvene at 3 p.m. to continue its drafting work on the proposed general comment on domestic application of the Covenant.
