Briefing note, 12 June 1998

12 June 1998

Geneva, 12 June 1998

John Mills, Media Officer for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), said that the High Commissioner had written on 11 June to the President of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Slobodan Milosevic, raising concerns about the human rights situation in Kosovo and urgently repeating her request that the Government of the Federal Republic permit the establishment of a sub-office of the OHCHR in Pristina.

The High Commissioner for Human Rights will participate in the opening of the Diplomatic Conference for an International Criminal Court in Rome. Her speech will be available in Geneva on Monday 15 June.

The Bureau of the Commission on Human Rights, charged with conducting a review of the mechanisms of the Commission, is circulating today an invitation to submit proposals and comments to Missions, NGOs and all interested parties. The invitation can also be found in the OHCHR’s web site. “A copy of the note verbale inviting to submit proposals and comments will be sent to the President of the ACANU since the press following the Commission and its mechanisms certainly count as an interested party,” Mr. Mills said.
