ACTING RIGHTS CHIEF CONDEMNS KANDAHAR BOMBINGS

07 January 2004

7 January 2004

The following statement was issued today by the acting United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Bertrand Ramcharan:

The acting United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights joins the Secretary-General in expressing shock and deep dismay over today’s bombings in Kandahar, Afghanistan, in which at least 16 people were reportedly killed and dozens were injured, many of them children.

The acting High Commissioner condemns this attack on the right to life in the strongest possible terms. Afghanistan has demonstrated in recent days, with its progress towards a political consensus, its commitment to establish a unified state based on the rule of law, stability, and respect for the dignity and life of its people. Crimes such as the Kandahar bombings are an attack on these noble efforts.

The acting High Commissioner sends his condolences to the families of the victims and the Government of Afghanistan.
