Expert on human rights in Cambodia to make official visit

GENEVA (19 July 2024) -- The UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Cambodia, Vitit Muntarbhorn, will visit the country from 21 to 27 July.

Muntarbhorn will visit Ratanakiri and Kandal provinces to gather information first-hand and will meet with Government representatives, civil society groups, human rights defenders, indigenous and minority groups, and community leaders.

In Phnom Penh, the Special Rapporteur will meet with Government representatives, human rights defenders, civil society organisations, journalists and media representatives, members of the diplomatic community, UN agencies and other key stakeholders.

The Special Rapporteur will conclude his visit with a news conference on Friday, 26 July at 14:30 local time at Sunway Hotel Phnom Penh, No 1 street, Sangkat Wat Phnom. Access will be strictly limited to journalists.

The expert: Professor Vitit Muntarbhorn was appointed as the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Cambodia in March 2021.

The Special Rapporteurs, Independent Experts and Working Groups are part of what is known as the Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council. Special Procedures, the largest body of independent experts in the UN Human Rights system, is the general name of the Council’s independent fact-finding and monitoring mechanisms that address either specific country situations or thematic issues in all parts of the world. Special Procedures’ experts work on a voluntary basis; they are not UN staff and do not receive a salary for their work. They are independent from any government or organization and serve in their individual capacity.
