BACKGROUND

Inhabitants of northwest part of Taplejung district are called Tokpegola. They are called Dhhokpya in their local dialect and are one of the marginalized indigenous nationalities in Nepal.The term Dhokpya in their language denotes the shelter of a cowherd. Topke is a derivation of Dhokpe, which can be traced back to Dhokpya and Dhokpyai. They speak Sherpa language which belongs to Tibeto-Burman language family. As many as 1,400 people can speak their mother tongue which falls under Tibeto-Burman language family and use Sambhota script.
