BACKGROUND

It belongs to the Algic, Algonquian, Central, Cree-Montagnais-Naskapi language family. Swampy Cree (sometimes known as Maskegon or Omushkegowuk) is a dialect of the Cree language complex. A division is sometimes made between West Swampy Cree and East Swampy Cree. The Cree spoken at Kashechewan also shows Moose Cree influence. It is one of the western n-dialects of Cree.
