BACKGROUND

It has 2 million speakers and belongs to the Bantu branch (Nguni group) of the Niger-Congo family. The name of the ethnic group speaking Ndebele is "Matabele". It is one of the main languages of Zimbabwe, close to Zulu. Conversely, Ndebele of Transvaal, in Sout Africa, is related to Northern Sotho.
