BACKGROUND

Bote people live on banks of the rivers in Chitwan, Nawalparasi, Parsa, Tanahu, Gorkha, Lamjung, Baglung and Udayapur districts. Botes have two sub groups: Paani Bote and Paakho Bote. Pakho means dry land whereas Paani means water in Nepali language. The language of Bote people belongs to the Indo-European language family. They call it 'Bot Language'. Only 2830 Botes speak their mother tongue, according to the census report.
