José Antonio Aguilar Contreras
Group of Independent Eminent Experts on the Implementation of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action
José Antonio Aguilar Contreras is the Founder and Executive Director of the non-governmental organization RacismoMX. He holds a Bachelor of Science in economics from the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México - ITAM) and a Master of Business Administration (honours) from the University of Essex , United Kingdom. He has also studied issues related to racism and xenophobia at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México – UNAM), the College of Mexico (El Colegio de México), and the University of Guadalajara. Throughout his career, he has focused on the defence of human rights, from women’s access to economic opportunities to the recognition of LGBTQI rights. In 2019, he founded RacismoMX (Educación contra el racismo, AC), a non-governmental organization whose mission is to combat racism and classism through research, education, and communication strategies. He is an Echoing Green fellow (2021) and Ashoka fellow (2024), being recognized for his work on racial equality. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of Mexico City's Council to Prevent and Eradicate Discrimination (Consejo para Prevenir y Eliminar la Discriminación).
