Safety of journalists

Summary

The report, submitted in accordance with General Assembly resolution 72/175, provides an overview of the current situation in relation to the safety of journalists and of the actions undertaken by Member States, regional organizations, the United Nations system and civil society organizations.

The report recommends that United Nations agencies, funds and programmes should continue to engage actively in the implementation of the Plan of Action and assess how further impact can be achieved through their actions. The United Nations should continue to integrate the safety of journalists and the issue of impunity in its strategies at the country level, including through integration into the development plans under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

States are strongly encouraged to continue to develop and to assist other States in developing national action plans on the safety of journalists, taking into account the gender dimensions, and to integrate the safety of journalists into national sustainable development strategies under the 2030 Agenda. States are also encouraged to strengthen national institutions and collaboration with civil society organizations, drawing on internationally agreed standards and methodology, to collect data on attacks against journalists and to ensure an enabling environment for them to perform their work.

Civil society organizations are encouraged to continue their engagement with the United Nations and States and to pursue their activities, with particular attention to women journalists.
