Summary

The Independent Expert on the promotion of a democratic and equitable international order, Livingstone Sewanyana, conducted a visit to Maldives from 12 to 21 March 2024. In the present report, the Independent Expert assesses the situation in the country and its efforts, good practices and achievements, but also some improvements to be made and challenges to be overcome, with regard to maintaining peace and security through regional and international cooperation, the country’s enabling environment to promote the economic and social protection system, the efforts made to guarantee freedom of association and assembly, the situation of migrant workers, the topic of public participation and good governance, in particular for women, young people and other traditionally marginalized groups, and, lastly, the country’s efforts in tackling the effects of climate change. The Independent Expert formulates recommendations with regard to further progress in achieving good governance for inclusive development and the realization of an equitable and democratic international order.
