Summary

The Special Rapporteur on the implications for human rights of the environmentally sound management and disposal of hazardous substances and wastes, Marcos Orellana, visited Mauritius from 25 to 29 October 2021. The present report contains his findings and recommendations to the Government of Mauritius.

In the present report, the Special Rapporteur focuses on and analyses, among other issues relevant to the mandate: the impact of the MV Wakashio oil spill, in particular from an environmental and human rights perspective; the challenges and best practices of a small island State in the sound management of hazardous substances and wastes, including with regard to the Mare Chicose landfill; and the health and environmental impact of pesticides.
