Purpose: Seeking information to inform preparations for the upcoming country visit of the Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of slavery, including its causes and consequences, to Australia from 11 to 22 November 2024.
Objectives

The Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of slavery, including its causes and consequences is seeking information in preparation of his upcoming country visit to Australia.

The slavery mandate focuses principally on aspects of contemporary forms of slavery that are not covered by other mandates of the Human Rights Council, including but not limited to issues such as:

  1. Descent-based slavery
  2. Debt bondage
  3. Serfdom
  4. Forced labour
  5. Children in slavery and slavery-like conditions
  6. Sexual slavery
  7. Child, early and forced marriage and servile forms of marriage.
Key questions and types of input/comments sought

In accordance with the established practice of mandate-holders, the Special Rapporteur welcomes all relevant submissions that any stakeholders may wish to transmit for his consideration in preparation of this visit, such as:

  • Recent analytical reports or surveys relating to the mandate of the Special Rapporteur, including as related to business conduct/supply chains;
  • Information on relevant policies, programmes and legal frameworks at federal, state and territorial, and municipal levels, including draft legislation;
  • Priority issues/concerns and situations that warrant the attention of the Special Rapporteur;
  • Suggestions on issues to examine and related locations to visit, including outside of capitals;
  • Contact information for civil society organisations, trade unions, human rights defenders, , businesses/investors, academics and other organisations to meet in different locations with description of their relevance to the mandate;
  • Information on labour exploitation of individuals or groups which face particular risks including migrants in agriculture, domestic work and other sectors of the economy. Labour exploitation as affecting workers with disabilities; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (First Nations) people, formerly incarcerated people; persons belonging to a linguistic, religious or ethnic minority and persons in situations of homelessness.
