Report – democratic and equitable international order: challenges to international peace and security

Issued by

Special Procedures

Report

Symbol Number

A/HRC/51/32

Background

Background

Maintaining international peaceful and security is one of the fundamental purposes of the United Nations, as stipulated in the UN Charter in its article 1. It is also the bedrock of a democratic and equitable international order, which requires the realization of, inter alia, the right of all peoples to peace and the shared responsibility of the nations of the world for addressing threats to international peace and security, that should be exercised multilaterally (Human Rights Council resolution 48/8 and General Assembly resolution 76/165, paragraphs 6(d) and 6(o)).

The current tragic events in Ukraine undermine at the very core the rules-based international order and are yet another reminder that decisive change is needed on several fronts to achieve a democratic and equitable international order.

Objectives

The Independent Expert intends to look at some of the main obstacles to the maintaining and strengthening of international peace and security at the global level from the perspective of his mandate, and ways to overcome them.

  2. What solutions do you deem necessary to overcome those challenges?
