Report on shelters and protection orders

Summary

Protection orders and shelters are extremely important for the protection of women, and their ability to overcome the effects of abuse and rebuild their lives.

In her report, prepared pursuant to Council resolution 32/19, the Special Rapporteur considers key elements of a human rights-based approach to integrated services and protection measures on violence against women, with a focus on shelters and protection orders. She provides recommendations to States, UN-Women and other relevant stakeholders.

Methodology

In the preparation of the report, the Special Rapporteur availed herself of a wealth of information on shelters and protection orders gathered, among others, through previous country visits experience, and a call for submissions in January 2017 on protection orders and shelters as two ways of prevention and protection of violence against women. On 13 January 2017, in London, the mandate holder also convened, jointly with the Centre for Women, Peace and Security at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), an Expert Group Meeting on shelters and protection orders.
