GENEVA / TEGUCIGALPA (18 November 2016) – UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights Kate Gilmore will visit Honduras from 21 to 24 November for the official opening of the UN Human Rights Office in the country.

Gilmore will host a reception to mark the Office’s opening on Wednesday 23 November from 18:00 to 20:00 at Hacienda El Trapiche in Tegucigalpa, to which media are invited.

During her visit, the Deputy High Commissioner will meet President Juan Orlando Hernández to express her appreciation for his and his Government’s engagement with the Office and with international human rights mechanisms. She will also meet civil society organizations.

The Honduras country office has the mandate to monitor the human rights situation in the country, advise State institutions and civil society on enhancing the promotion and protection of human rights, provide technical cooperation to the State; and advocate publicly on situations of serious concern.
