GENEVA (7 May 2010) – The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay will start a three-day visit to Japan next Wednesday, after a short stop in the South Korean capital Seoul where she will address a major conference of women judges from all across the world.

On Thursday 13 May, the High Commissioner is scheduled to hold talks with Japan’s Prime Minister, Mr. Yukio Hatoyama, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Katsuya Okada and the Minister of Justice, Ms. Keiko Chiba.

During her stay in Tokyo, the High Commissioner will also meet with other senior government officials, members of the Diet, the Japanese Federation of Bar Associations and representatives of civil society and of minority groups, as well as with the Association of the Families of Victims Abducted by North Korea, the Vice-Rector of the UN University, which is located in Tokyo and senior UN staff stationed in Japan.

Before arriving in Japan, on Wednesday 12 May, the High Commissioner will be a keynote speaker at the opening of the world’s largest gathering of women judges, the International Association of Women Judges’ 10th Biennial International Conference, which is being held in Seoul.

While in South Korea, the High Commissioner will also meet the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, ChunYoung-woo.
