Country visits
Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants
Country visits provide an opportunity for the Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants to better understand the human rights situation of migrants in that country through a direct dialogue with the Government concerned, representatives of civil society and migrants themselves.
Discussions conducted during such visits enable the Special Rapporteur to enhance his/her understanding of national legislation, policies and practices affecting migrants, with a view to issuing specific recommendations to promote and protect the human rights of migrants, taking into account the social, political and historical context in each country.
Visits are undertaken only at the invitation of a Government. However, the Special Rapporteur may solicit an invitation, based on factors such as the scope and gravity of the allegations received, and the potential impact that the mission may have on the human rights of migrants.
