Mr. Okechukwu Obinna Ibeanu, former Special Rapporteur (2004-2010)

A professor by training, Mr. Okechukwu Obinna Ibeanu has extensive experience in the area of environmental and social issues and has been actively working, through various functions, to promote the realization of the whole range of economic, social and cultural rights.

Mr. Ibeanu holds a postgraduate degree in Political Science from the University of Nigeria where he also obtained his PhD. Mr. Ibeanu is the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Nigeria where he has also been Professor of Political Science. He has also been a guest lecturer at the Woodrow Wilson International Centre for Scholars and the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Besides having extensive teaching experience, Mr. Ibeanu has also vast research experience. He was a Ford Foundation Fellow in Refugee Studies at Oxford University, Chief of Research at the Centre for Advanced Social Science at Port Harcourt, Fellow of the United Nations University in Tokyo and at the Institute of World Economy at the Hungarian Academy of Science, Organizing Secretary and Researcher at the Pan-African Centre for Research on Peace and Conflict Resolution.

Mr. Ibeanu is the author of over 90 publications (books, monographs, journal articles and book chapters, technical and research reports, conference and workshop papers) dealing with issues such as governance, corporate responsibility, democracy, environment, security, women, refugees and displaced persons.

Mr. Ibeanu was appointed Special Rapporteur of the Human Rights Council on the adverse effects of the illicit movement and dumping of toxic and dangerous products and wastes on the enjoyment of human rights in 2004, and served until 2010.
