Ms. Annalisa Ciampi, former Special Rapporteur (2017)

Ms. Annalisa Ciampi was the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and of Association from 1 May 2017 to 30 November 2017.

Ms. Ciampi is a Professor of International Law at the University of Verona in Italy and a Visiting Professor of European Human Rights Law at the Monash University Prato Centre, in Italy. She is also an Attorney at Law and a member of the Italian Bars of Florence and of the Court of Cassation.

In Italy, Ms. Ciampi taught at Universities of Florence, Trento, Macerata and Catanzaro. Prior to Monash, she was a visiting professor of international law at the Academy of European Law, European University Institute (2008) and the Institut des Hautes Etudes Internationales, Paris II (2009). Her work in the fields of human rights and international law has been widely recognized both nationally and internationally. She has been awarded EU grants for her research about international law, including as Marie Curiae Action Supervisor on "The 4th Geneva Convention's Drafting History as the origin of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) and Duty to Prevent (D2P)" in 2015. She is a member of the leading professional associations of international lawyers worldwide, including ACUNS (where she also serves on the Board of Directors for the term 2017-2020) and ASIL.

Ms. Ciampi graduated magna cum laude from the University of Florence (Juris Doctor), has a Master's Degree from Harvard Law School (LLM) and a PhD in International Law from the University of Rome La Sapienza. In 2010, Prof. Ciampi was selected as Brandon Fellow at the Lautherpacht Centre of International Law in Cambridge, UK.

Ms. Ciampi served as a member of the European Committee of Social Rights and as an expert to the Committee of Legal Advisers on Public International Law of the Council of Europe. She served as an ad hoc judge of the European Court of Human Rights and as a legal adviser to the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs. She was also a Visiting Professional with the Legal and Advisory Section of the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.
