Profile

The Tunisia Country Office was established in April 2011 at the request of the Tunisian Government, through a Memorandum of Understanding. The Office enjoys a full mandate to protect and promote human rights. It focuses its activities on a broad number of human rights issues, including strengthening accountability and the rule of law, and promoting the realization of a more inclusive and therefore sustainable development. It supports national stakeholders' efforts towards the establishment of an effective national human rights protection system, through the monitoring of the situation, the provision of expert advice, the delivery of capacity-building programmes and the facilitation of dialogue.

For the programming years of 2018-2022, OHCHR provides support to consolidate the democratic transition. The Office works towards making the established institutions and mechanisms fully operational, so they can deliver on their mandates. In addition, the Office stepped up its work to promote the economic, social and cultural rights and to support the country on its efforts to prevent violent extremism, a potential threat to the process.

OHCHR in Tunisia continues to strategically advocate for the realization of all rights for all; and identifies and advises duty bearers in compliance with the international human rights standards.  Support to civil society remains an essential part of OHCHR’s engagement in Tunisia in support of the democratic consolidation.
