SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN TO VISIT ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN

Yakin Ertürk, the Special Rapporteur of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights on violence against women, its causes and consequences, will visit the Islamic Republic of Iran from 29 January to 6 February 2005. Ms. Ertürk aims to gather first-hand information on the question of violence against women in the country.

The Special Rapporteur is scheduled to visit Tehran and the Province of Ilam and meet with representatives of the Government, non-governmental organizations, women’s organizations and individuals engaged in human rights work, as well as with United Nations officials. Ms. Ertürk will report orally on her visit to the next session of the Commission on Human Rights this spring and present a formal report to the sixty-second session of the Commission in 2006.

Ms. Ertürk, Professor of Sociology at Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, was appointed Special Rapporteur of the Commission on Human Rights in 2003.
