HUMAN RIGHTS COMMITTEE CONCLUDES FIRST READING OF DRAFT GENERAL COMMENT ON EQUAL ENJOYMENT OF RIGHTS BETWEEN MEN AND WOMEN

The Human Rights Committee this afternoon concluded the first reading of its draft general comment on article 3 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights pertaining to measures to be taken by States parties to ensure the equal right of men and women to the enjoyment of all civil and political rights set forth in the treaty.

The Committee is expected to adopt the draft general comment in the course of its current session after a second reading of the text. During its brief discussion on the document this afternoon, Committee members said they had found discrimination against women in social security laws, and in the citizenship or rights of foreigners in a country, which violated article 26 of the Covenant. Members also said that the rights which minorities enjoyed under article 27 of the Covenant could not be exercised in such a manner as to affect the right to equal enjoyment of all the Covenant rights by women.

Following its discussion of the draft general comment, the Committee continued its deliberations in private to consider drafting concluding observations on reports it had already considered during the current session.

When the Committee reconvenes at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, 27 October, it will continue its consideration of draft concluding observations in a private session, and in the afternoon it will take up the report of Cameroon (document CCPR/C/102/Add.2).
