TO VISIT MOROCCO

The Special Rapporteur on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography, Ofelia Calcetas-Santos, will visit Morocco from 28 February to 3 March at the invitation of the Government.

The Special Rapporteur, whose previous country visits have included the United States, Laos, Kenya and Fiji, will visit Rabat, Casablanca and Marrakech to see for herself the situation of children in Morocco, particularly the vulnerability of street children to sexual exploitation. She will also visit Tangiers in the north of the country to investigate allegations that Moroccan and other children from north and west Africa are being trafficked into Europe.

During her visit, the Special Rapporteur will meet with representatives of different sectors of Moroccan society, including governmental and non-governmental officials working in the areas of child protection, tourism and foreign affairs, as well as private individuals, in order to ascertain an accurate picture of the situation in Morocco. She will make recommendations to the Government as to measures that could be taken to improve the protection of the rights of Moroccan children.
