2015 Workshop of Regional and Sub-Regional Courts, European Court of Human Rights, Strasbourg, 20 and 21 October 2015 - Presentations

Our work with regional human rights mechanisms

A workshop of regional and sub-regional courts was held by OHCHR, with the collaboration of the European Court for Human Rights, on 20-21 October 2015 in Strasbourg. Participants included judges and experts from regional and sub-regional courts in Africa, the Americas and Europe, treaty body experts, NHRIs, civil society actors and academia. They shared knowledge and good practices on activities, jurisprudence, procedural and substantive issues and identified specific areas for cooperation. Key topics were the execution of courts judgements, judicial interpretation and application of international human rights norms, gender stereotyping and case backlogs. Inter-regional dialogue on jurisprudence and case law was identified as useful common practice with courts and mechanisms cross referencing their respective norms and jurisprudence. The existing inter-regional network of focal points, coordinated by OHCHR, will continue to promote and facilitate cooperation between regional and sub-regional courts and UN mechanisms.
