Recognition and respect of inalienable human rights was the focus of an event that explored the rights to education, healthcare, food, shelter, and other rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The event, sponsored by the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus of Belize and the UN Human Rights Office, was a chance for civil society organizations, the private sector, and the public to learn more about rights-based approaches and activities.

“Human Rights and fundamental freedoms are in our DNA,” said Antoinette Moore, Justice of the High Court of Belize, Southern Administrative District and the featured speaker. “However, while human rights are part of the Belizean spirit, we must continue to do all we can to shed the legacies of elitism, colonialism, sexism, racism, classism that remain with us. There is much work to do, and it is an everyday challenge.”

Events for children and adults

In September, OHCHR Peru in coordination with the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Women held two art workshops for forty girls from children's shelters to raise awareness of their human rights and discuss the relevance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

OHCHR Peru organized these two art workshops for girls between 12 and 16 years of age in shelters run by the Ministry of Women. The purpose of this activity was to disseminate, through cooperative work, the content of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, highlighting its importance and allowing them to creatively elaborate their own version of the Declaration. The workshop also provided an opportunity to reflect on the most significant articles related to children and life with dignity, resulting in a reflection by the girls that materialized in the creation of small art books with the articles of the Declaration, which they created with the help of facilitators, OHCHR and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
