35th anniversary of the establishment of the Committee against Torture

Date

12 December 2023

LOCATION

GENEVA

The year 2023 marked the thirty-fifth anniversary of the establishment of the Committee against Torture. In order to mark the occasion, and to reflect on the body of work the Committee has undertaken over the past 35 years, the Committee, with the support of its Secretariat and UNOG Communications team, ran a promotional campaign.

Coinciding with the celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a video was released highlighting the work of the Committee through a series of interviews conducted with stakeholders, including the World Organization Against Torture and Forum for Human Rights, and Committee members.

In addition, an interview with the Committee’s Chair, Mr. Claude Heller, and one of the vice-chairs, Mr. Sébastien Touzé, was aired on UNOG francophone podcast programme “ONU Info Genève” on 20 July 2023. The Interview touched upon the work of the Committee and its fundamental role in upholding the prohibition of torture; the overall situation with regard to combating torture; ongoing efforts towards universal ratification and implementation of the Convention; States parties and other stakeholders’ cooperation with the Committee; and the need for the allocation of the necessary resources to support the work of the UN human rights treaty bodies.
