In 2019, OHCHR launched its first ever LGBTI Fellowship Programme, developed under the strategic direction and commitment of the Office to have a more gender-diverse and inclusive workforce.

The fellowship is intended to be a capacity-building initiative. The Fellow has the chance to work hands-on within the United Nations human rights system, and to transfer this knowledge once back in their home country.

In 2019, a Trans Fellow joined the Office for 7 months. After a pause in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2021 the Fellowship will be open to an intersex human rights defender.
