Expert Mechanism to discuss Right to Development issues at its 5th session in New York

GENEVA/NEW YORK (7 March 2022) – The Expert Mechanism on the Right to Development, a subsidiary body of the Human Rights Council, will hold its 5th session from 9 to 11 March 2022 in New York in fully-virtual meetings that will be webcast live.

At this session, the Expert Mechanism will hold a general debate with Member States and other stakeholders. It will also engage in discussions with Special Procedures mandate holders on the Duty to Cooperate and the Right to Health and the Right to Development in the Pandemic Era.

The session will mark the 35th anniversary of the United Nations Declaration on the Right to Development with:
·      a discussion on a Commentary to Article 1(1) of the Declaration
·      a meeting with non-governmental organizations with Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) consultative status

The Expert Mechanism will also consider thematic studies. More information on the session and relevant documents can be found here.

The Expert Mechanism on the Right to Development is a subsidiary body of the Human Rights Council providing thematic expertise on the right to development in searching for, identifying and sharing best practices with Member States and promoting the implementation of the right to development worldwide. It holds two annual sessions in New York and Geneva.
