GENEVA (30 September 2020) - The UN Committee on Enforced Disappearances (CED) has rescheduled its public dialogue with Iraq on how the country is addressing the issue of enforced disappearances. 
The dialogue, which will be online and publicly accessible, will now take place on 5 October from 12:30 to 2:30 pm Geneva time, continuing on 7 October from 4 to 6 pm. It will be webcast on UN Web TV in English and Arabic.
Iraq ratified the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance in 2010. The Committee examined Iraq’s first report in 2015 and issued a set of recommendations for the State party.
In the upcoming dialogue, the Committee will discuss with Iraq the implementation of its obligations under the Convention. Specific subjects include the evolution of Iraq’s strategies to prevent enforced disappearances, the search for disappeared persons and the investigation of alleged enforced disappearances.

Background
The Committee on Enforced Disappearances monitors States parties’ adherence to the Convention for the Protection of all Persons from Enforced Disappearance. The Committee is made up of 10 members who are independent human rights experts drawn from around the world, who serve in their personal capacity and not as representatives of States parties. The Committee’s concluding observations are an independent assessment of States’ compliance with their human rights obligations under the treaty.
