UN Committee against Torture to review Jordan

GENEVA (18 November 2015) – The UN Committee against Torture is due to review Jordan on 20 and 23 November in sessions that will be webcast live.

Jordan is one of the 158 states that have ratified the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and so is required to undergo regular examinations of its record before the Committee of 10 independent experts.

The Committee’s dialogue with the delegation from the Jordanian Government will be from 10:00-13:00 (11:00 - 14:00 in Amman) on 20 November and from 15:00-18:00 (16:00 - 19:00) on 23 November.

Among the issues for possible discussion: administrative detention, including of alleged victims of torture; judicial safeguards for detainees; conditions of detention; prompt, impartial and effective investigations of torture and domestic violence allegations; use of police force in dispersing demonstrations; “honour killings”; punishment of those guilty of rape; measures to counter arbitrary detention, violence against and trafficking of migrant workers, especially women; mechanisms to inspect places of detention.

The Committee will publish its concluding observations here on Wednesday 9 December. 

A news conference is scheduled for 12:30 on 9 December at Palais des Nations in Geneva when the Committee will discuss its concluding observations on Jordan and the other countries being reviewed – Liechtenstein, Azerbaijan, Austria, Denmark and China.
