AFTERNOON
HR/CT/99/23
27 July 1999

The Human Rights Committee this afternoon continued compilation of lists of advance questions it will send to Governments whose reports on implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights will be taken up at the Committee’s autumn session.

At that session, to be held from 18 October to 5 November, the Committee will consider reports from the Republic of Korea, Norway, Cameroon, Morocco, Hong Kong and Macao.

Among advance queries related to the fourth periodic report of Morocco, the Committee asks to be updated on progress towards holding a referendum on the question of Western Sahara and requests an assessment of the status of the civil and political rights enjoyed by the people of Western Sahara, a territory which had been under Moroccan administration. It also asks about the situation of women in Morocco and about whether measures have been taken to eliminate laws that the Committee, during consideration of past Moroccan reports, has termed discriminatory against women.

The Committee will reconvene at 10 a.m. Wednesday, 28 July, to examine a draft document aimed at improving guidelines for States’ reports to the Committee.
