OHCHR DEPLOYS REGIONAL ADVISER FOR CENTRAL ASIA

The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights OHCHR has deployed an international rights expert in Kazakhstan as its regional adviser for Central Asia.

Professor Rein Mullerson arrived in Almaty earlier this month and took up his new functions on 9 March. Professor Mullerson has broad expertise in the application of international human rights standards and procedures, as well as of the legal systems and practices in the region. His activities will include providing advice and training to government officials and policy makers, non-governmental organizations, UN agencies in the Central Asian countries, and other international organizations active in the region. He will also undertake public information activities and support coordination and cooperation with other international organizations and donors working in the field of human rights.

Prior to joining OHCHR, Professor Mullerson, a former member of the United Nations Human Rights Committee, served as Chair and Professor of International Law, Kings College, University of London. His deployment to Central Asia brings the number of OHCHR regional presences to seven, including those in Addis Ababa (Eastern Africa), Bangkok (Asia-Pacific), Beirut (Arab Region), Santiago (Latin America and Caribbean), Pretoria (Southern Africa) and Yaoundé (Central Africa).
