BACKGROUND

Kumal people live mainly on the outskirts of hills and Tarai. They are scattered across Jhapa, Ilam, Morang, Sunsari in the east to Gorkha, Palpa, Arghakhachi and Baglung in the west. The term 'Kumal' refers to those who make clay pottery. The language of Kumals belongs to Magadheli branch of the Indo-European family. According to the latest census, only 12,222 Kumals can speak their language.
