BACKGROUND

Hayus live along rivers like Sunkoshi, Arun and Likhu and in villages like Okhreni and Sukajor of Ramechhap district. Of late, they have also migrated to Sindhuli, Dhanusa, Mahottari, Sarlahi, Siraha and Kavre districts. Hayu is one of Nepal's most endangered indigenous groups. Hayu language belongs to Tibeto-Burman language family. Today, one in every two Hayus knows their mother tongue.
